Furano

The Resorts

The Furano Ski Resort provides an excellent environment for a ski holiday, boasting excellent facilities and incredible powder. The resort itself sits on the northeast side of Mt. Furanonishi and sports 23 runs with a favorable outlook for both intermediate and beginner skiers as it has plenty of long groomers that you can cruise down or test your mettle by tucking in and flying down the slopes like a rocket. For expert skiers, Furano has traditionally had quite a boring outlook due to its overly strict off-piste skiing policies. Fortunately enough Furano have now completely relaxed their policies and off-piste tree skiing reigns supreme for advanced skiers looking to shred some fine, untouched powder.

Another awesome feature of Furano Ski Resort is that its lifts are extremely efficient. Unlike many other Japanese and world ski resorts where you feel like you spend more time in line and on the gondola, the efficiency of Furano’s lift systems puts you on the slopes more than not. Make sure to train up your legs so you survive a long session on the pristine powder.

Getting there

Furano is located in central Hokkaido and has several modes of transport available for guests wishing to explore the area. First port of call is New Chitose airport, which is is roughly 100km from Furano and offers accessibility options from most major airports throughout Japan. Once in New Chitose Airport, you have the choice of a train or traveling by road. Both options get you into central Furano in very similar times, however comfort and accessibility really favors shuttle buses. Regular services run after many major flights into and out of New Chitose Airport and is quite easily the recommended way to get to and from Furano. Similar to shuttle buses, there is also the option to the brave soul who wishes to rent a car and battle the conditions to make their own way to Furano. As the weather is unpredictable and can produce adverse conditions, we do not recommend guests drive to Furano.

The Snow

Furano is regarded as one of the finest powder snow destinations in Japan, with powder often waist deep! This incredible powder that falls over the mountains of central Hokkaido is comprised of roughly 96% air and 4% water, perfect powder to shred when it is even neck deep. Whilst this powder is of the highest quality, it does somewhat lack in quantity when compared to other Hokkaido ski resorts considering it only gets roughly 9m per season. The main cause of this quality over quantity approach is due to its location in central Hokkaido. As the south-easterly siberian air mass travels over the sea of Japan it gathers a huge amount of moisture, and when it hits the tall mountains on the western seaboard it dumps this moisture and it forms snow. The further over land it travels the more moisture it dumps and less moisture, less snow. However, less moisture also means better powder! So it's a blessing in disguise.

As a small consolation prize, for its lack of quantity it makes up for it in excellent sunny days!

The Food

Situated roughly 110km from Hokkaido’s largest city, Sapporo, Furano offers visitors a different experience than many other ski resorts in Hokkaido. Firstly, Furano has a central resort in The Prince Hotel, however this hasn’t stopped the township around it from thriving, offering a really niche and quaint environment. A benefit of its location is its access to high quality produce and thus, excellent cuisine. Whilst the winter activities are widely documented and loved by powder hounds, there is a gastronomic journey to be had throughout Furano and greater Hokkaido. This unique cuisine is largely thanks to the extremely fertile lands that produce some of the finest ingredients and its close proximity to both the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean, and of course, many excellent chefs to prepare said ingredients. Make sure to try the fresh sushi or a warm curry on your next trip!
