The Resorts

Rusutsu ski resort are rather peculiarly placed, having two resorts split over the three peaks of Mt. Isola, East Mt. and West Mt. East Mt. and Mt. Isola are converged, semi-cleft mountains with interlinking runs, whereas West Mt. is a seperate mountain on the western side of  the town. Aside from its peculiar structure, there is one common theme across all of the mountains, deep, deep powder. Rusutsu gets blanketed with 13 meters of snow on average and has a snow base of 2.95m, an absolute powder haven for discerning powder hounds.

The courses offer a wide range for beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders. The beginners can soak up a little bit of time on the long groomers and really work on their craft, where as the intermediate and experts can log some time on the racks, boxes and jumps of Freedom Park. Aside from the this on-piste action, Rusutsu has some of the best tree skiing available in all of Japan! Make sure to get off-piste and carve up some untouched powdery goodness.

Getting there

New Chitose airport is the gateway to exploring the ski resorts of Hokkaido and is roughly 90km from Rusutsu. Once in New Chitose Airport, you have two choices available, get a shuttle bus or self drive. Seeing as both options travel via road, both get you into rusutsu in very similar times, however comfort and safety really favors shuttle buses. Regular services run after many major flights into and out of New Chitose Airport and is quite easily the recommended way to get to and from Rusutsu. For the brave soul who wishes to rent a car and tackle the conditions to make their own way to Rusutsu, the weather is extremely unpredictable and can produce adverse conditions, thus we do not recommend guests drive to Rusutsu

The Snow

Sitting roughly 50 km inland from Hokkaido’s western seaboard, Rusutsu receives a bounty of high quality, high quantity snow. This location puts Rusutsu in prime position to pilfer the transcontinental easterly air mass that drops the bulk of Hokkaido’s plentiful snow. To quickly explain how this works, during the winter months an extremely cold mass of air gathers over south-eastern siberia and makes its way over the, relatively warm, sea of Japan. As it does so, it soaks up plenty of moisture and when it hits the majestic mountains, Mt. Raiden, Mt. Youtei and Mt. Annupuri, they force the clouds to dump out the moisture. The further overland it travels, the less moisture it has to offer and the less moisture, the better powder it produces. This is why Rusutsu’s location gives it some of the best conditions in all of Japan!

Family Friendly

Situated in a valley between the East and West mountains, the resort consists of two major hotels, the Rusutsu North  & South Wing and the Westin Rusutsu. This area provides a really family friendly environment and boasts features such as an amusement park, wave pool, swimming pool, 4D theater, heated baths, games arcade and a convention centre. For something a little different, the resort has a real Japanese kitsch theme to it, particularly displayed through cool features such as an antique merry-go-round!

There are also an abundance of restaurants available throughout the resort, with both the Rusutsu North  & South Wing and the Westin Rusutsu having plenty of options. You can dine at a wide array of restaurants that offer cuisine such as classic Japanese, buffet style, chinese, Italian pizza, gourmet western and one restaurant the serves up a mixture international food. There are also several smaller Japanese style restaurants outside the major hotels.
